Come along with me

Image
Conditions on the Baltic Sea here in Rostock were rough yesterday. We did a quick spot check at Warnemünde but weren't happy with the conditions. So we grabbed a quick coffee at the local HW-Shapes surf shop and then headed for Kühlungsborn where we were greeted with some very strong winds. I made the wrong call and took the 4.0 while Philip was on a 4.0 too with 20 kilo more on the scales. It was still a great experience since we do not get these conditions very often up here: starboard tack, strong currents and some chunky waves. I loved every bit of it. The sea can cure so much pain and misery. It washes away our sorrows and sets us free. Seize the day, move forward and come along with me - That's why I chose the song. It just came into my head and I kept it there throughout the session. So these are not massive moves but the clip rather shows the unembellished truth of a cold day up here. Thank you Christoph for holding onto the camera in the cold!

Dreams, hope and life goals

Image
What is your biggest dream and what do you do in order to make it come true? Do you work towards your goals on a regular basis? Do you know, deep inside, that you are on the right path? You can call yourself a lucky person if you are committed to working on your dream daily, no matter what destiny throws into your path.  Does everybody need a dream, a mission in their lives, something to give it purpose? Or isn't simply living purpose enough?  Instead of hoping, instead of wishing for a dream to come true, just start living. Hope can be a false friend, but it keeps you going nonetheless.  In the end, it all comes down to being in the moment, using its potential, undistracted, in the zone, finding your flow. When riding a wave or doing a jump on your board, it's all there is to this exact moment. Discipline leads to success, of course. However, no amount of discipline and perseverance can beat someone's love for what they are doing. If you love what you do, the moment that...

Lightwind Session at Salzhaff

Image
The forecast for today was on the light side. I packed the 5.6 and headed to Salzhaff. Once at the spot, it didn't look windy enough. The water level was also really low. I could catch some very light gusts and pump myself onto the plane every once in a while. I captured some of the moves on camera. It was good to be out there, in nature, in the fresh air, even seeing some glimpses of the sun.  I felt light and a bit cold. Especially my feet were freezing because the water here has already cooled down quite a bit. I am not so happy with what the moves look like on film but have to remember that this is 5.6 in very marginal conditions and that the water was really shallow. I still felt kind of in tune with everything. The water was crystal clear, the sunlight, filtered through the grey clouds, danced over the hilly landscape to the southwest - like a spotlight. When the sky could be seen through the thick layers of clouds, it shimmered in a light blue color reminiscent of warmer day...

Cycling in the December Sun

Image
Wouldn't have thought that today would bring that much sunshine. I spontaneously joined the local bike group for a nice Sunday ride. It was really cold but I could feel the warmth of the sun's rays on my black clothes. Group rides are such a cool thing when everything looks out for one another. It also helps you to stay on track whenever you are not that motivated. Endurance sports are a great way of staying fit off the water when there's no wind. You have to find the right balance though. Too much endurance training makes your muscles slow. You need those fast twitch muscles for explosive freestyle moves. So don't overdo it. I also find that the more I run and cycle, the more I need to stretch.
